About the book

Literature and society are very much interrelated and cannot be viewed separately. In more than one way, the development of literature is the development of the society. Everyone has a role to promote literature as it would bring in positive changes in society and benefit one and all. The role of literature is greatly appreciated in making the life beautiful by analysing the past events and activities of the characters. Literature, which is the mirror of society, has been emphasising social problems, dealing with women as central characters and their sense of restlessness, a vague sense of disquiet, a search for identity. The streak of restlessness that drives a woman to break the so-called traditional path set for her – that of wife and mother – often brings about her calamity. It is the contradictory roles of being self-effacing to self-enhancing which pulls a woman apart. Women have been oppressed since centuries and the conditioning of society is such that everyone accepts it. Women are the only oppressed group, which continues to live in an intimately close relationship with their oppressors. They need to realise their own power to control their own space and lives, which allows them to gain intellectual pursuits, so that they can convey their thoughts and feelings, impressions and experiences and only then the society will register it.
