Abstract
The paper attempts to trace the outcome of V.S Naipaul's first face to face encounter with India focusing the negative aspects as depicted in his travelogue An Area of Darkness, one of his least touched books. Further the paper shall try to make the image of India so created by Naipaul more transparent with an oblique acceptance of most of Naipaul's observations about it. The paper accepts his anger as an unconscious attachment to India. The phrase 'Naipaul-complex' in the title has been used in a particular sense
