About the book
This book is a monograph of an illiteratewoman poetcalled Mookambika Ulloor, who lived in a remote village of Udupi District in Karnataka state (1908-1998). Those were the days when education was denied to women in most of the orthodox families. Mookambika did not go to school. She was married at a very early age, and unfortunately became a widow. She had to face a lot of adverse circumstances throughout her life. But she had an amazing talent of composing poetry on various social issues, with perfect prosody. Poetry used to flow out of her mouth at the time of doing household work. Her mother also was a poet. However, no one knew about her talent until very late in her life. It was only during the last decades of her life that she was recognized by the local people. Only a smallscale publicity was given to herin the regional newspapers. This book contains the tragic story of her life, the translation of some of her poems, the laurels that she received at the regional level, and also the write-ups of some of the established writers about her.
