About the book
India has a rich tradition of storytelling known as the Katha tradition. India is also known as home of many great tales such as Katha Sarita Sagara , Dasa Kumara Charita , Suka Saptati, Panchatantra and so on. Being a plurilingual nation, it has tales in many languages. Even today, there are many tales which are still in oral form.
There have been efforts by many scholars to collect and document some of them. Some have also translated them. The efforts made by organizations like Sahitya Akademi, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Bhasha Research Centre and Tribal Akademis are noteworthy.
The tales included in this collection are taken from various sources such as The Panchantra, Jataka Tales and from The Arabian Nights and retold. Some are recollected from our memories. We put these stories together so that they could be preserved and could be selectively used for pedagogic purposes later. The collection has a variety of tales. Some are popular among the mainstream. Other are obscure but prevalent in the rural and the un-lettered. But they never fail to teach people. They are full of morals and lessons. Hence, we like to call them tales of wisdom.
