About the book
Memory and forgetting imply power relations, control and sovereignty and therefore participate in processes of stabilization of space, population, and imagined identities. In the age of globalization, the concepts related to memory and forgetting have taken on new significance. Globalization implies economic and cultural de-territorialization and the consequent issue of the intensification of social relations. However, globalization paradoxically generates renewed interest in memory and forgetting and an anxious desire to stabilize definitions of spaces. Discourses on memory and forgetting are fraught with political implications, as memory and forgetting circumscribe particular spaces, making them concrete, and contributing to a sense that their identities can be delimited, delineated and differentiated from those of other spaces. Memory remains relevant in its myriad manifestations: psychological, social, historical, cultural, philosophical, religious, economic, political and many others. Artistic practices, such as film, theatre and visual arts exhibit memory in many ways.
