About the book
Dhruvswamini is among the last plays written by Jaishankar Prasad, a prominent poet, playwright, novelist and storyteller in Hindi literature. Written in 1934, this play is considered a classic and his best creation among all his works. It is said that Prasad poured the experiences of his whole life while writing this play. It’s historical in nature and derives its theme from Indian history, the Gupta period, to be more precise. Though history as a theme, the plot is woven in such a way that it shows excellent contemporary relevance. The play holds tremendous academic and staging importance, and I feel that a proper translation will help meet both purposes. This translation has been attempted with the idea ofsavouring the play to the fullest, besidesenacting it on stage.
