The protagonist of the novel, Timothy, is a journalist by profession. He is a converted Dalit Christian who marries a Brahmin woman named Bhagirathi. Fully committed to his profession, he is a progressive youth. When heavy rains submerge several areas of the district, he independently engages in relief and aid programs under the auspices of a non-governmental organization. In the process, he meets Abdullah, Farzana, Ganga, Sudarshan, and a few others. During the relief operations, he encounters eye-opening incidents that reveal people's true colors. Through his field visits to villages, he realizes how the rain unmasks the true faces of officials, journalists, social workers, politicians, poets, and writers. His absence at the office is not taken seriously, and his personal family life also faces turmoil. Shockingly, the district administration honors deceitful individuals who claim credit for the relief work. Devastated by this, Timothy takes an unexpected decision at the end of the novel. Nature, in the form of a calamity, strips away the masks of society's so-called high-minded men.
